A Heat Pump Works Both Seasons

A heat pump in Avondale never really gets an off season. It cools from spring to fall, then reverses on the first chilly mornings, so the compressor, the reversing valve and the outdoor coil log more hours than a cooling-only system. Heat pump repair in Avondale usually comes down to a short list of parts, and knowing which one failed decides whether it is a quick fix or a bigger conversation.

Signs Something Is Wrong

  • Cool air on a winter morning, or warm air on a summer afternoon: often the reversing valve or its solenoid.
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not spin: a failed capacitor or fan motor.
  • Long run times and a high bill in both seasons: low refrigerant from a leak, or a dirty coil.
  • Ice that will not clear on a cold morning: a defrost board or sensor problem.
  • The system trips the breaker: a shorted compressor or wiring fault, and a reason to stop resetting it.

Dust and Monsoon Season

Open lots, new construction and desert around the West Valley all raise dust, and monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30 on the National Weather Service calendar. Both put fine dust into the outdoor coil. A packed coil cannot move heat in either direction, so the system runs longer, the compressor runs hotter and parts fail early. Cleaning the coil is often part of the repair.

How We Handle It

We test the electrical side, the refrigerant charge, the airflow and the changeover in both modes before we price anything. We repair leaks rather than topping them off, because refrigerant added to a leaking system leaves again. R-410A heat pumps can still be serviced and charged; new equipment built since 2025 uses A2L refrigerants such as R-454B.

Repair or Replace

A capacitor, contactor or defrost board on a sound system is a repair. A failed compressor or a leaking coil on an older heat pump is where replacement usually wins, and we give you both numbers. Every system we install includes three years of maintenance in the price.

Common Questions

Why does my heat pump blow cool air in heating mode?

During defrost it briefly runs in cooling mode, which is normal for a few minutes. If it blows cool air for longer, the reversing valve or defrost control needs a look.

Do you work on older Avondale systems?

Yes, including R-22 heat pumps. Since R-22 production ended in 2020, we price the repair and the replacement side by side.
