Phoenix runs its ducts through the worst possible place, and almost everybody does it. The attic sits far hotter than the outdoor air through the summer, and the supply air inside the duct is in the fifties, so the temperature difference across a thin duct wall is enormous. That is why this city amended its code to require R-8 in attics rather than accepting the lower national default.
It is also why leakage costs more here than it does elsewhere. A leak on the return side in a hot attic is not just losing air you paid to cool, it is actively pulling 150 degree attic air into the system and asking the equipment to cool that too. The same hole in a mild climate would be a rounding error.
Age and material matter next. A lot of the local housing stock is on flex duct or duct board that has had decades of heat cycling, and those materials do not fail gracefully. They go brittle, sag between supports, pull apart at the collars, and crush where somebody has been in the attic working on something else.
Then there is the layout question nobody asks. Additions, converted garages, and enclosed patios get added to duct systems that were designed before those rooms existed, and the far end of a long run never recovers from it. Replacement is the one moment you can fix the design rather than the symptom, which is why the design conversation happens before the material order at our shop on North 35th Avenue.
