Indoor air quality work is four separate jobs, and the industry tends to sell the smallest one. The first is filtration. MERV ratings run on a scale where a higher number captures smaller particles, but a denser filter also resists airflow, and a system whose blower was never sized for that resistance loses capacity and can freeze a coil. The right filter is the highest one your equipment can actually pull through, which is a measurement rather than a preference.
The second is the duct system. Return leaks in a Phoenix attic pull hot, dusty, unconditioned air straight into the air you breathe, and no filter downstream fixes air that entered after the filter. This is the single most common reason a house stays dusty after somebody has bought better filters.
The third is ventilation and humidity. Newer construction is tighter than the housing stock it replaced, and homes still running an evaporative cooler are deliberately adding moisture and outside air. Those two situations need opposite answers, which is why a single product recommendation for every house is a sales script rather than a diagnosis.
