The cooling season here is long enough to be its own climate. The first 100 degree day averages around May 2, the city sees roughly 111 days a year at or above 100, and the normal July high sits near 106. A system that starts the season with a weak capacitor or a half pound of charge missing does not fail in May. It fails in the middle of the worst week of the year, which is also the week nobody has an opening.
Dust is the second half of the problem. Monsoon season runs June 15 through September 30 on the National Weather Service calendar, and blowing dust from those storms lands in the condenser coil and the filter. A coil cleaned in March goes into monsoon with room to breathe. A coil already loaded in March does not.
A lot of older Phoenix housing carries a package unit on the roof rather than a split system on a pad. That makes the annual visit a roof access job, and it also means nobody in the household ever looks at the equipment. Problems there are found by a technician or by a failure, and there is no third option.
Then there is how the city actually runs its thermostats. Houses sit empty and warm through the afternoon, then get asked to pull down fifteen degrees starting at six. That is the hardest thing you can ask of a system, and it is exactly what a spring tune up is checking it can still do.
