What a Tune-Up Actually Checks

A Peoria air conditioner can run for most of the day from May to September. The parts that fail in that stretch, capacitors, contactors and a dirty condenser coil, usually show warning signs weeks earlier. An AC tune-up in Peoria is about catching those signs in spring, when a part swap is a routine visit, instead of in August, when the system quits on the hottest afternoon of the year.

The Checklist

  1. Condenser coil. Rinsed from the inside out so the unit can reject heat. Dust from Grand Avenue traffic, construction in the north end of the city and monsoon storms all end up here.
  2. Capacitors. Tested against their rating. A weak capacitor is the most common cause of a no-cool call, and it is cheap to replace before it fails.
  3. Contactor. Checked for pitting and burned contacts that make the outdoor unit drop out.
  4. Refrigerant charge. Measured, not guessed. If it is low there is a leak, and we tell you rather than topping it off.
  5. Condensate drain. Flushed so it does not back up into the ceiling or trip the safety switch.
  6. Airflow and filter. Checked at the blower, because a restricted filter can freeze the indoor coil.
  7. Temperature split and amp draw. Recorded so next year’s visit has a baseline.

When to Book

Spring, before the first 100-degree week, is the best time. A second visit after monsoon season, which runs June 15 through September 30 on the National Weather Service calendar, is worth it if your unit sits where dust collects, near open lots or new construction.

Older Systems and Newer Systems

Central Peoria has many systems that are 15 years old or more. A tune-up on one of those is also an honest look at how much life it has left, so a replacement can be planned instead of forced. In newer north Peoria homes the visit protects the warranty and keeps efficiency where the equipment was rated.

Common Questions

How long does a tune-up take?

About an hour for a single system. Homes with two systems take longer.

Does a new system need tune-ups?

Yes. Every unit Adams installs includes three years of maintenance in the price, so those visits are already covered.
