Diagnosing a Heat Pump in Both Modes

Many Peoria homes rely on a heat pump for both summer cooling and winter heat. That one machine runs most of the year, so when it fails you lose comfort in either season. Heat pump repair in Peoria starts with testing the system in both modes, because a fault that only shows up in heating, like a stuck reversing valve, can hide during a summer service call.

Common Failures

  • Reversing valve or solenoid. The system will not switch between heating and cooling, or blows the wrong temperature.
  • Capacitor and contactor. Heat-stressed electrical parts that stop the compressor or fan from starting.
  • Refrigerant leak. Weak output in both seasons and long run times. We find and repair the leak instead of adding refrigerant that will leak out again.
  • Defrost board or sensor. Shows up as ice that will not clear from the outdoor coil on a cold morning.
  • Backup heat strips. If the heat pump cannot keep up on a cold morning and the strips are out, the house never warms.

Older Systems in Central Peoria

Some older heat pumps in central Peoria still run R-22, and production of R-22 ended January 1, 2020. A leak on one of those systems is worth pricing against a replacement before money goes into the refrigerant. R-410A heat pumps can still be serviced and charged, and new equipment built since 2025 uses A2L refrigerants such as R-454B.

Our Process

We check the electrical side, the charge, the airflow and the changeover in heating and cooling. Common parts ride on the truck, so most Peoria calls finish on the first visit. You get the diagnosis and the number before anything is replaced, and if replacement makes more sense we show you both prices. Every system we install includes three years of maintenance in the price.

Common Questions

Why is my heat pump steaming in winter?

Steam from the outdoor unit during defrost is normal. Ice that builds up and never clears is not.

Is a heat pump repair covered by a permit?

No. A repair on existing equipment does not need one. A full replacement is permitted work, and we pull that permit through the city.
