Getting the Heat Back On

Winter mornings in the Valley are short-lived, but a house without heat at dawn is still a real problem, especially for older residents. Furnace repair calls in Sun City tend to arrive in a rush on the first cold mornings of the season, when a heating system that sat idle all summer is asked to start again.

What Usually Goes Wrong

  • The burners light and go out. A dirty flame sensor cannot confirm the flame, so the furnace shuts the gas off for safety.
  • Nothing lights at all. A cracked igniter, a failed inducer motor or a tripped safety switch.
  • Air blows but it is cold. On a heat pump, a reversing valve or backup heat problem. On a gas furnace, an ignition fault.
  • It runs for a minute and stops. Often a clogged filter making the furnace overheat and shut itself off.

Before You Call

Check that the thermostat is on heat with fresh batteries, the system switch is on, the breaker has not tripped and the filter is clean. If it still will not heat, leave it off rather than resetting it over and over.

Safety First

If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get out and call 911. A working carbon monoxide alarm near the bedrooms is worth having in any home with gas heat, and we are happy to point out where one should go.

How We Handle the Visit

We test the ignition sequence, the safeties and the airflow, explain what failed in plain terms and give you the price before we replace anything. Igniters, flame sensors and capacitors ride on the truck, so most repairs finish the same visit. On an older system we will also tell you honestly whether the repair is worth making, and show you the replacement price next to it.

Common Questions

Will you come out early in the morning?

Our phone line is open 24 hours. Call, tell us what the system is doing, and we will set the earliest visit we can.

Do you work on heat pumps too?

Yes. Some Sun City homes heat with a heat pump and some with gas, and we repair both.
