One System, Two Seasons

A heat pump cools the house through the long summer and reverses to heat it on winter mornings, so in Sun City it runs most of the year. When it fails, the house loses comfort whatever the season. Heat pump repair in Sun City starts with testing both modes, because some faults only show up when the system tries to switch.

Signs It Needs Attention

  • It blows cool air when set to heat, or warm air when set to cool.
  • The outdoor unit hums but the fan does not turn.
  • It runs constantly and the electric bill is higher than last year.
  • Ice builds up on the outdoor coil on a cold morning and does not clear.
  • The breaker trips when the system starts.

What Is Usually Behind It

A failed capacitor or contactor is the most common cause, and both are quick repairs. A stuck reversing valve keeps the system in the wrong mode. A refrigerant leak shows up as weak output in both seasons; we find and repair the leak rather than adding refrigerant that will leak out again. On cold mornings, a failed defrost control or backup heat strip can leave the house chilly even when the heat pump itself is fine.

Older Systems

Many Sun City homes are on their third or fourth system, and some still have R-22 heat pumps. Production of R-22 ended January 1, 2020, so a major leak on one of those systems is worth pricing against a replacement before money goes into the refrigerant. Newer R-410A heat pumps can still be serviced and charged, and equipment built since 2025 uses A2L refrigerants such as R-454B.

A Clear Answer Before Any Work

We explain what failed, why, and what it costs, and we put the price in writing before we start. If replacement makes more sense, we show you both numbers side by side and the choice is yours. Every system we install includes three years of maintenance in the price.

Common Questions

Why does my heat pump make steam in winter?

That is the defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil, and it is normal for a few minutes. Ice that stays is not.

Can you explain the options to a family member too?

Yes. We are happy to go over the diagnosis by phone with a family member before you decide.
